Kugelmans has the proud reputation of being the oldest surviving herbal company in Australia
Hermann Emil Kugelmann was born at Coramandel Valley in South Australia in 1858, his parents Carl and Louise had migrated to Australia from Prussia in 1848.
His father was a carpenter and and also became active as a Herbalist from 1866, that is the commencement date given in promotions of the Kugelman products.
Hermann moved the business from Adelaide to Brisbane in 1883, with further expansion to Sydney and by 1892 to Brisbane, with periodic visits to treat patients in provincial towns throughout Queensland and New South Wales. Later Hermann bought "Gooramadda" a property on the Murray River which had formerly belonged to Dame Nellie Melba, it was here that he built large sheds in which to store his supply of herbs. Hermann retained control of Kugelmans until at age 74 when he passed away in 1932.
In 1934 Kugelman & Co Pty Ltd was registered as a Victorian Company by two of Hermanns sons, Waldemar and Vernon, the business purpose being Botanic and General Merchants, Manufacturer, Importer, Exporter and supplier of herbs, drugs, chemicals, medicines both patent and proprietary and veterinary medicines.
Vernon resigned from the company in 1945 and Waldemars wife Nancy a commercial artist took his place.
In the 1970's Pieter van Wunnik DC ND, an Osteopath, Naturopath and Herbalist who founded the well known Summit Health Products and Windmill Herb Farm name.
became acquainted with Waldemar and arranged to buy the business which occurred in December 1977. The three products that were marketed at that time were
Kugelmans Balsam of Paradise, Kugelmans Stomach & Aperient and Kugelmans Electric Essence which were all registered products in Victoria.
